Position Title: Staff Counselor/ Therapist

Newtown Youth & Family Services (NYFS) is a licensed non-profit mental health clinic and youth service bureau that is dedicated to helping children and families achieve their highest potential.

Position Summary:

The primary function of a staff counselor/therapist is to provide face to face therapy to individuals (children and adults), couples and families who come to the agency with mental health and family-related concerns. The staff counselor/therapist should follow all professional and agency standards, policies and procedures. Provides all services in a confidential manner sensitive to the individual’s special needs and circumstances.  Exercises discretion and independent judgment with respect to counseling and therapeutic services.

Essential Job Functions:

1.            Clinical Practice – provide individual, couple, family, group therapy to clients.

-              Case coordination and liaison with other agencies as appropriate.

-              Monitoring of medication when prescribed by the NYFS Medical Staff as well as adherence to all agency policies and procedures concerning clients who are receiving medication.

-              Referral to appropriate support services as identified in individualized plan of care.

-              Handling a cross-section of clients in accordance with the needs of the agency and the qualifications and expertise of the counselor/therapist.

2.            Maintain case quota as defined from management.

3.            Keep all  electronic clinical records current, accurate,  and follow agency policies and procedures, including, but not limited to:

-              Intake assessment

-              Progress notes

-              Formulate and complete treatment plans

-              Complete 90 day reviews

-              Complete requests for information from insurance companies and/or other agencies in a timely manner

-              Participate in the setting of fees and requests for fee changes in conjunction with billing

4.            Provides crisis intervention services in accordance with agency policies and procedures.

5.            Organizes and facilitates therapeutic and support groups as needed.

6.            Attend and actively participate in all of agency’s special events.

Essential Job Requirements:

Requires a minimum of a master’s degree in social work or a related field with knowledge of current psychotherapeutic techniques and candidates must be actively working towards professional social work or therapy licensure and must have CT LMSW, Professional Counselor Associate or Marital and Family Therapy Associate License. Licensure (LCSW, LPC, LMFT) in the State of Connecticut strongly preferred.

Experience in counseling individuals (children and adults), couples families and/or groups.

REQUIRED SKILLS             

•             Ability to work with diverse staff and excel in a multi-cultural environment.

•             Ability to sense and meet the needs of the agency’s clients.

•             Ability to work with appropriate community and state agency personnel, school, and insurance personnel and other referral sources.

•             Ability to multi-task.

•             Ability to work in a collaborative manner.

•             Ability to organize and prioritize.

•             Familiarity with personnel practices preferred.

•             Conscientiousness, patience, diligence.

•             Proficient use of Microsoft Office Products, including Word.

•             Knowledge of modern office practices and of standard office equipment.

Essential Physical/Mental Skills Required for the Position:

•             Employee must be able to read and write English.

•             Employee must be able to communicate with clients, staff, employees, volunteers, and the public-at-large.

•             Employee must be able to communicate clearly via telephone.    

•             Employee must be able to sit long periods of time.

•             Employee must be able to type and work at the computer for long periods of time.
