2012 Youth Leadership Award Winner: Brianna Grills, Waterford

Brianna Grills served on the Waterford Youth Services Bureau Advisory Board for 3 ½ years. As a student representative, she consistently provided the board with thoughtful insight about the issues facing youth and has advocated for their needs. She has spoken against underage drinking and substance abuse. She has also devoted a decade to raising money for cancer research. What’s so unique about Brianna is that she does not do such services for her own recognition but because she truly believes in them.

During her high school years, Brianna accumulated over 1,600 volunteer hours which brought her close to breaking a school record. For several years, she organized Great Skate to Ice Out Cancer on behalf of the American Cancer Society. She was inspired to do so in honor of her young cousin who lost a hard fought battle against the disease. Brianna recruited her peers to become involved by skating or raising money. It was amazing to see how such a young person could display such leadership skills to put together such a professional and well organized fundraiser. Brianna is also a youth lacrosse coach, an integral part of the town’s adopt-a-family program and a mentor to young people with special needs.

Brianna is a product of the Youth Service Bureau – a place where she readily admits she learned to “help other youth and promote positive experiences.” As she enters college, it is wonderful to know that a girl who became part of Waterford Youth Service Bureau when she was in idle school has left an indelible mark on our agency and in out community.
